Life in Dark Water by Al Stewart ~ Fear Hides our True Self Away from Everyone, But the Ego

Al Stewart was a Master Songwriter, as Al Stewart was a Master storyteller based upon Ancient Allegories and Parables. Stewart wrote his songs in the Same fashion as Jesus Christ taught his Sermons, via Allegories and Parables, where the Important Message of the Song was Encoded within these Grandiose Tales, and in the Case of Al Stewart, often TRUE Historical Tales...

In the Case of this Song, Life in Dark Water, it mentions the Mary Celeste, a Canadian Built Mercantile Ship that was found Deserted off the Azores on December 4th, 1872, where the Ship was at Half Sail, in Good Condition, with All Cargo in tow and all Crew Belongings safe in their Quarters...However, there was NO CREW LEFT aboard the Mary Celeste, the Lone Row Boat was Missing, and thus, the Vessel was there, but empty, as was the Human Being, this song was written for or about...

Al Stewart used this Odd historical tale to write about the Human Condition, and in particular, the Human Mind, and what Happens to our Minds when they succumb to Fear. This is why Stewart named the Vessel in the Song, Marie Celeste (just as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle did in his own Short Story, J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement, to emphasize to the Listener that this Song WAS an Allegory for the Human Ailment of Fear, turning 'The Mary Celeste' Brigantine Merchant Vessel into 'Marie Celeste', a Lost Soul at the Bottom of the Sea within a Submarine with Loads of Supplies, but NO CREW at all...

And as we turn the Allegory into a Parable, just as Christ would have done, we see that what Al Stewart was Truly writing about is what happens to the Human Condition when we succumb to Fear, and simply can No Longer Cope with Reality at all...

Thus, in the Song, Stewart writes how the Protagonist abandons 'His' attempts at Living Life in the Out There World with other people, by retreating within to ESCAPE All encounters with other Humans, so that there is no chance for anyone else to Deny him, Embarrass him, Ridicule him, or Abandon him...

Which quickly Paints the Picture to the Listener of someone who has abandoned Human Interaction for Fear of Pain and Rejection, by Living at 'the Bottom of the Sea'...

'No memory, tell me what's wrong with me
Why am I alone here with no rest?
And now the name of the ship's not the same
How long has it been "Marie Celeste?"
Now there's nobody from the crew left
Five hundred years supply of food just for me,

[Chorus]

They'll never know, never no never
How strange life in dark water can be..'

And thus, through these Passages of Time (the Title of the Album was Al Stewart's Biggest Seller, Time Passages), Stewart presents someone who is totally alone and lost, with little to No Hope for Rescue, as the Protagonist DOES NOT WANT TO BE FOUND, missing out on Life, Love and Relationships, simply because the Fear of being Rejected, Abandoned and, or UnLoved was too Painful for the Protagonist to Handle, which then begs the Question...

What must have Happened within this Person's Life to bring them to this Point of Fear and Isolation; thus, we are also being challenged by Stewart to NOT Judge this Person, without first walking a Mile within their Shoes...

And while Al Stewart was Truly a Master Songwriter of this Genre, he was NOT alone, as virtually All Artists and Bands were doing the exact same things, using Fantastical Tales within their Songs, to Illustrate a Teaching that was at the Center of the Storyline...and again, this is how we Create Allegories and Parables, and how we take these Stories and make them RELATABLE to All Men and Wombmen, who may be suffering from the Same Limitations in Life...
