Rumble A senior police official appealed for peace on November 1 after protests erupted in Pakistan in response to a ruling by the country’s Supreme Court to acquit a Pakistani Christian woman who had been found guilty of blasphemy. Asia Bibi was sentenced to death after being convicted in 2010 of insulting the Prophet Muhammad during a row with her neighbors. However, following an appeal to the Supreme Court, that verdict was overturned. Protests followed in several parts of the country, in many cases involving the hardline political party Tehreek-e-Labbaik, which is particularly focused on blasphemy laws.
