Dayton, Oh - A simple check on a civilian sleeping in his vehicle turned into a man being arrested and charged with multiple offenses.
On Feb. 11, around 5 a.m., Dayton Police Department officers found a vehicle stopped and facing the wrong way in the 200 block of Delaware Avenue.
As officers approached the vehicle, they noticed a 37-year-old man unconscious at the wheel, with his car still running. Responding officers made multiple attempts to wake the sleeping man. When they were able to, they ordered the man to turn off the car and put it in park.
According to the Dayton Police Department, the driver did not comply with the officers’ demands and put the car into drive. He began to flee, nearly hitting the marked police vehicle.
The man drove a short distance and stopped. Officers continued to order the driver to park the car and exit, but the driver persisted.
Dayton police said the man attempted to flee a second time, before crashing into a light pole and causing it to fall. Officers ran to the vehicle and the driver was trying to rapidly accelerate.
The officers were able to enter the car and put it in park. When officers tried to arrest the man, he resisted, trying to flee a third time.
Dayton police say officers told the man if he continued to be uncooperative, they would tase him. The driver did not heed their warning and continued to resist, leading officers to deploy a taser.
They successfully removed the driver from his vehicle.
According to police, responding officers found a loaded firearm that would have been within the driver's reach and contained 34 rounds of ammunition.
Due to the man’s prior felony conviction for possession of cocaine, he is not permitted to carry a firearm.
Police also say it's believed that the man was intoxicated at the time of the incident.
The man was placed under police custody and taken to Montgomery County Jail. He's facing multiple felony and misdemeanor charges.
