Proposes a Law to Strengthen Child Protection and Mandatory Reporting

Na'Zyiah Harris was a 13-year-old girl whose life ended far too soon. Her tragic death—murdered because she was pregnant by her abuser and refused to terminate the pregnancy—highlights a devastating failure in our child protection systems. Her story compels us to act to prevent similar tragedies.

In response, with the backing of her nonprofit Auntie Angie's House, Angela Stanton-King is proposing the Na'Zyiah Harris Law to strengthen mandatory reporting requirements and protect vulnerable children from abuse. This legislation will ensure that adults who know about child sexual abuse face criminal penalties if they fail to report it.

Key Provisions of the Na'Zyiah Harris Law
The proposed legislation will:
Establish clear criminal penalties for any adult who knows about child sexual abuse and fails to report it
Create stronger protections for abuse survivors who come forward
Remove legal barriers that have historically enabled abuse to continue unreported
Implement comprehensive training requirements for mandatory reporters
Establish clear reporting protocols and timelines

Why Immediate Action is Needed
"Na'Zyiah's death was preventable," says the founder of Auntie Angie's House, Angela Stanton-King. "When adults choose silence over action, they become complicit in the abuse. This law will help ensure that no child suffers in silence while those around them look the other way."
The proposed legislation addresses a critical gap in current child protection laws. While many states have mandatory reporting requirements for certain professionals, the Na'Zyiah Harris Law would extend this responsibility to all adults who have knowledge of child sexual abuse.
