It’s the story of Teresa Youngblut, 21, charged in the shootout, and Felix Bauckholt, a German maths whiz who studied in Canada who was shot dead on the highway. And, of course, of Border Patrol Agent David Chris Maland, who was shot and killed as well.
On a wooded highway in Vermont, America’s second-least populated state, about eight miles south of the border with Canada things suddenly turned from bizarre and mysterious to dark and deadly after U.S. Border Agents pulled over a car with two young people inside who they’d been watching for days because of weird behavior.
Without warning, a gunfight broke out, killing both a Border agent and one of the suspects, while the woman driving the car — who allegedly was the first to shoot — was injured. And now I have video I want to share of the mysterious couple acting strangely, sent to me by the manager of the hotel where they were staying hours before the shooting.
The footage is a prelude to Jan. 20, 2025, shooting on Interstate 91, the major north-south highway cutting through leafy New England. Southbound, around mile marker 168, three on-duty, uniformed U.S. Border Patrol vehicles pulled over a blue 2015 Toyota Prius hatchback with a North Carolina licence plate. Their reason was an immigration inspection. The car was registered to a German citizen living in the US. Agents said they suspected his visa had expired, but the FBI later said it hadn’t. About 15 minutes into the highway interactions, officers allege the young woman, who had been driving, suddenly and without warning, got out of the car and started shooting at a border agent with a handgun. There was a moment of mayhem. The passenger, the German, then reached for a gun, agents said.
