Man Created Makeshift Use Of His Car Preparing For Hurricane

To prepare for gigantic Hurricane Florence that was headed right in their direction, one North Carolina man decided the best thing to do was to try to drive their Volkswagen Jetta onto the front porch of their home. In order to get it onto the porch, which stood about three feet off the ground, he built, and we use that word loosely, two extremely sketchy and potentially dangerous ramps out of cinder blocks and planks of wood. The ramps looked like they would have trouble holding up a small child, let alone a two ton vehicle, but as we mentioned, a man has to do what a man has to do for his family when danger comes knocking on your door.

The best part of this story isn't that he actually was able to get the car onto the front porch, barely, but the reason why he did it. We are unsure if it is hilarious because it is crazy, or if it really is brilliant! He drove the car onto the front porch , not because he wanted to save it from the high winds and flash flooding. He wasn't worried it would float away or that a tree would come crashing down on top of it! The reason he drove the Jetta onto the three foot front porch of his home was to use it as a generator!

When LaSha Ross, who shot the video, saw what her husband Devin was planning, she quickly grabbed the video camera. “It wasn’t actually to save the car... it was to get the car on the porch for electricity,” she said. "We planned to use the car as a generator, plugging household appliances into a 1000W power inverter connected to the 12-volt battery."

The other reason for moving the car, LaSha said, was that her husband wanted to show that it could be done after his friend voiced some doubts. “He was pretty adamant about proving his point that he could do anything,” she told me.

It was quite a close call and there were even some moments when we thought he wasn't going to make it up on the porch at all, especially after the right piece of lumber gave way. Once the back tire started hanging over the edge of the porch, we thought it was all over, but low and behold, the man from Lumberton, North Carolina actually pulled it off, providing his family with power to help them endure the powerful Hurricane Florence that was headed their way.
