Incredible drone footage has captured the dizzying setting of Meteora - a rock formation in Greece upon which sit a number of monasteries seemingly impossible to reach.

Meteora, which means ‘suspended in the air’ in Greek, houses a complex of Eastern Orthodox monasteries on rock pinnacles which rise over 1300ft above the Peneas Valley, near Kalambaka.

Now a Unesco World Heritage Site, the rocks formed around 60 million years ago, eroded by water and wind, and were home to cavemen before the monasteries were built in the 14th century.

Monks living in the area sought shelter from Turkish attacks on the Greek and used removable ladders and ropes to reach the summit.

But fortunately for modern-day travelers, who are often left gaping in awe at the astonishing sight, stairs were cut into the rocks in the 1920s.

At their peak in the 16th century there were 24 monasteries. Today there are six still functioning, while the remainder are largely in ruin.
