A forest fire continued to burn in the Portuguese tourist region of the Algarve on Wednesday, August 8, for a sixth consecutive day. High winds hampered efforts to control the blaze in Monchique, in northwestern Algarve, according to Portuguese newspaper Publico. Patricia Gaspar, the deputy national operational commander for Civil Protection, told the newspaper the fire continued to present “great complexity” and “extremely aggressive behaviour.” More than 1,200 firefighters remained at the scene to tackle the wildfire, which prompted the evacuation of at least 230 people.
