Life in the 21st century can be very hard. The money, the tempo, the stress can really get to us, and if that’s not enough, we always have the mass media to tell us about something terrifying that happened half a planet away from us. It seems like everyday it gets harder and harder to enjoy the little things in life and just genuinely relax. But sometimes, there are stories like this one that makes us feel grateful to be human, grateful to be kind and grateful to have the ability to help others.

The world is not perfect. It sometimes even feels like the bad outweighs the good, but a single act of kindness can brighten our whole day. Just seeing that there is good in others is enough to have our faith in humanity restored.

We’re always striving towards supplying each human being with the bare necessities in life. Everyone should be entitled to clean drinking water, food and shelter. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. Whether they live in rural areas or in the concrete jungle, a painfully large number of the human population finds themselves down on their luck. We live in an era where there is a great amount of people living on this Earth that are often one penny too short in their pockets and don’t know how they’re going to pay the bills. We often think that the only thing that can solve their problems and make them live a happier life is pure magic. Some end up living on the streets with nowhere to shelter their body from the weather, scraping bins for food and begging for a couple dollars. The sight is heart wrenching.

Unfortunately, it’s almost impossible to get rid of homelessness. It comes as a side effect of bad social regulations as well as bad decisions. In order for society to prosper, there have to be guidelines, and unfortunately these guidelines are exactly what’s standing in the path of homeless people. They are stuck in limbo between what is morally right and what is legally right so in the meanwhile, they live on the streets, the metro stations and literally anyplace that they can make their home.

A video shared to Facebook on June 21 shows police in Staten Island, New York, helping a homeless woman celebrate her birthday. The footage, shared by Facebook user Mandie Dee, shows NYPD officers singing happy birthday while carrying a meal over to a woman they refer to as Lisa. “It’s a good reminder to our community that our officers truly do care about the public they serve every day,” she wrote alongside the heartwarming clip, which had over 33,000 views at the time of writing.
