Matter changes states and also has different forms, and new ones are being discovered all the time. Most people know about solids, liquids, gases and plasma- but that’s only the beginning. Scientists are trying to build out every form and phase of matter, and so far they’ve found some pretty incredible things. There’s excitonium, photonic matter, neutron-degenerated matter, quantum, quantum spin liquids, string-net liquids, dropleton, rydberg matter, time crystals, quark gluon plasma, and that’s not even all of them!

Usually scientists have to put regular matter into some pretty crazy conditions to get these new forms to appear. For example, to find excitonium, researchers used lasers to spin a bunch of ions in ytterbium. They essentially poked them with the laser and a regular interval, but then some of them acted as if they were poked before the researchers poked them- breaking time symmetry and creating time crystals? Pretty crazy stuff.

There are also some new forms a bit closer to home. For example, there are at least 18 types of water ice! Ice is a solid latticework of v-shaped water molecules. It can be cuic, symmetrical, ordered, disordered, crystalline, and more! It all depends on the temperature and pressure.
