Fiery Explosion After Private Firm's Rocket Fails to Take Off

A rocket developed by a Japanese start-up focused on providing affordable commercial space flights plummeted to the ground in a fiery explosion shortly after liftoff on Saturday, June 30. During the launch from Taiki in Hokkaido prefecture, the 10-meter rocket, produced by Interstellar Technologies, lifted off the ground for about four seconds before experiencing engine failure. The rocket was filled with ethanol and liquid oxygen, according to Tokachi Mainichi News, resulting in a massive explosion. No injuries were reported. The company’s president Takahiro Inagawa apologized for the failure and said they were investigating the cause of the launch failure, before promising to do better.
