Timothy West, celebrated actor of stage, film, and television, has passed away at age 90. Known for his versatile career spanning from Shakespearean roles to popular TV shows like EastEnders and Great Canal Journeys (which he co-hosted with his wife Prunella Scales), West’s career made him a household name from the 1960s onward.

West’s family, including his children Juliet, Samuel, and Joseph, announced his peaceful passing, sharing that he was surrounded by loved ones. His family expressed heartfelt thanks to the NHS staff at St George’s Hospital and Avery Wandsworth for their care during his final days.

Timothy West’s acting repertoire included leading roles in classics like Uncle Vanya, Death of a Salesman, and King Lear. He was also celebrated for his portrayal of historical figures such as Winston Churchill and Mikhail Gorbachev. On television, he brought characters to life in dramas like Edward the Seventh, Hard Times, and Royal Jelly, and he was recognized with a CBE in 1984 for his contributions to the arts.

One of his most cherished roles in later life was in Great Canal Journeys, a heartfelt series exploring canal routes across the UK and beyond. The series became especially poignant as it depicted West and Scales navigating her dementia diagnosis with love and resilience.

In addition to his wife and children, West is survived by his sister, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His legacy will endure through his memorable performances and the many lives he touched throughout his remarkable career.
