No matter what everybody tells you, one thing is certain - we all want to look good. Whether it is through rigorous training, body augmentation, purchasing a certain type of wardrobe or adapting a certain lifestyle, we as humans strive to be perceived a certain way by our surroundings. Because it makes us feel good about ourselves.

While some of us do it simply because it feel good deep down, others take it to the extreme, augmenting their own appearances to the point looking like someone else entirely. Bodybuilding, tattoos, piercings, plastic surgery, they are all the culprits that have made humanity so self-conscious. One such individual is the a man from Brazil that has gone to extreme lengths to make himself look way bigger, physique-wise.

Meet Valdir Segato. Inspired by pop-culture icons like the Incredible Hulk, he has been risking his life for the past few years in an attempt to look a certain way. Each one of his biceps measure a staggering 23 inches - because he has been filling his muscles with painful synthol injections.

Valdir’s addition started five years ago and, inspired by the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Hulk, he is now proud to be called “He-Man” and “the monster” whenever people pass him on the streets of Sao Paulo. He says he tried the conventional method; you know, eating right and going to the gym, busting his rear end in order to look good. But apparently that wasn’t good or fast enough for him. He wanted to get extreme.

According to the construction worker, this is his dream come true, something he had been searching for so long and finally conquered.

This isn’t the first time Valdir has been addicted to stuff that needs a needle to enter your body. In his youth, he was addicted to drugs and lost so much weight, that people used to call him “skinny dog” and “little skull”. He says he has had enough and turned his life around by going to the gym.

But when one fellow gym-goer introduced the Brazilian Hulk to synthol, he soon became hooked on the muscle-enhancing substance. Now he is regularly injecting it in his pectorals, his biceps and trapezius. He also went from 55 kilos (121.2 lbs) to 80 kilos (176.37 lbs) of bodyweight, but confesses that the oil does not make him stronger. Just bigger.

"The oil is mostly aesthetic,” he says. “It models the body and makes the muscle swollen - it doesn't affect strength."

As with all addictions, Valdir’s new obsession can cause some serious health issues, including having his muscles amputated. He has already had a few brushes with death before, like the one time he had injected himself with a larger dose of anabolic steroids and ended up in the hospital for it.

His newly adopted figure also makes it hard for his to find a partner, since people are too intimidated by his hulkish looks to approach him. "I do get attention, but people seem to be scared to approach me, I think that's the problem,” he adds. The reactions he does get in public are mixed, with some mocking him, while others stopping him to ask for pictures. Stil, he says he doesn’t care what people think. He likes himself and it is enough.

Isn’t that what we all strive for in the first place?
