The 416 Fire near Durango, Colorado, stood at more than 4,000 acres burned on Wednesday, June 6, having grown by 25 percent since Tuesday. The fire was 10 percent contained, officials said. Authorities opened US Highway 550 to traffic on Wednesday from 8am to 6pm, but only one lane was open, with an escort vehicle to guide motorists through the area. Motorists were warned not to stop in the burn area, including to take photos, and to stay with the police escort vehicle. Some areas around the fire remained under mandatory evacuation orders.
