Hurricane Helene especially impacted North Carolina, where an estimated 600 people or more went missing. The storm impacted the tiny town of Spruce Pine, which has been extremely important for mining related to the production of semiconductor chips, as well. Bizarrely, in 1958, there was another Hurricane Helene that hit on the same day, was the same size, and went along a similar path to the 2024 hurricane.
