Malian Immigrant Climbs Four Floors To Rescue Child Hanging From Balcony
A 22-year-old Malian man, Mamoudou Gassama, has been hailed for his heroism after he scaled the outside of a Paris apartment building to rescue a four-year-old child hanging from a fourth-floor balcony on May 26.
“I saw all these people shouting, and cars sounding their horns. I climbed up like that and, thank God, I saved the child,” Gassama said. “I felt afraid when I saved the child… [When] we went into the living room, I started to shake, I could hardly stand up, I had to sit down,” he added, as reported by AFP.
After the rescue, Gassama was praised by Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, and invited to the Elysee Palace, where he met President Emmanuel Macron. Macron said Gassama would be granted citizenship, and offered him a job with the Paris emergency services.
President Macron told young Mamoudou that all of his document will be put in order, while giving him a medal for his bravery. After receiving his recognition, the young man said: “I’m pleased because it's the first time I’ve received a trophy like that.” He arrived in France in September 2017 and lives in a hostel for immigrants.
The footage, shows how the fearless young man, whom the media world-wide have been dubbing Spider-man, pulls himself from balcony to balcony, in order to reach the child, while another man was holding a firm grip on it from a neighboring balcony. When Mamoudou reaches the floor, he anchors himself on balcony wall with his legs, then reaches out for the kid and pulls him to safety. When firefighters arrived on the scene, they found that the child was well.
