Developing more powerful locomotives reaches a mechanical impasse on the Santa Fe Railway in 1900.

The practice of building the fireboxes between the rear driving wheels had severely limited the ability to development more powerful locomotives. A solution had to be found or steam locomotive technology would go no further. This is the story of how Santa Fe Railway solved this problem.
