In our "Patriot Outreach" segment, "The Battlefront Counterattack," we have Colonel Tony Monaco and special guest Dr. Dawn M. Weston, a retired Army ISG. Today's topic is "Stolen Valor." Essentially, it refers to falsely claiming military service rank or recognition or even someone else's identity. It's considered a crime because in 2005, legislation called the Stolen Valor Act made it a misdemeanor to lie about earning any kind of military medal or honor, including wearing, manufacturing, or selling any medal without legal authorization. The reasoning behind this legislation was to prevent fraudulent claims regarding the receipt of military honors, which damage the reputation and significance of such decorations. Penalties for these actions included fines and imprisonment. However, in 2012, the Supreme Court declared this legislation unconstitutional as it infringed upon the 1st Amendment rights of freedom of speech. Dr. Weston, who is also a retired Army First Sergeant, mentioned that the military lives by the values of loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage.
