The streets of the UK appear to be calm again after the country was swept up in a week of racist and Islamophobic rioting. The civil unrest followed unfounded rumours circulating online about the perpetrator in a knife attack in the town of Southport, where three young children were murdered, and several others hospitalized.
Claiming to be protesting the mass stabbing, demonstrations quickly descended into riots in cities and towns including Southport, Sunderland, Rotherham, Blackpool and Liverpool. Mosques and hotels thought to be housing asylum seekers were among the targets.
Several countries including Nigeria, Malaysia and Kenya issued travel warnings for citizens in the UK as news of the riots spread, with many Muslims feeling particularly unsafe.
But in Liverpool, the Muslim community is trying to take matters into their own hands and reach out across the riot line to avoid more danger in future.
