Can Wine Grapes Get SUNBURNED?

In the world of winemaking, there's nothing quite as sobering as watching a vineyard bake under the relentless summer sun. Sunburn isn't just a human problem—it’s a grape grower's nightmare. In this video, we take you to Raffaldini Vineyards & Winery in North Carolina's Yadkin Valley, where the sun shines bright, and the stakes are high. After a recent heatwave, the vineyard is fighting back against the harsh solar rays that threaten their precious grape crop.

Sunburn can devastate vineyards, causing everything from slight browning to the complete collapse of grape berries. It can also hinder the ripening process, leading to significant losses in both yield and quality. Essentially, sunburned grapes don't make tasty wine! To protect their vines, Raffaldini uses a naturally derived crop protectant with kaolin particles—tiny, inert clay mineral crystals that reflect ultraviolet and infrared radiation from the vine canopy. Basically, the clay gets in the way of the rays!

While sunlight is vital for grapevine growth, too much of it can lead to heat stress and sunburn, damaging the grapes and ultimately affecting the quality of the wine. The kaolin particle film (KPF) method, though not a surefire solution, provides a layer of protection that helps keep the grapes cooler and less prone to sun damage.
