Side-splitting footage of two old ladies trying to take a selfie outside a famous church has gone viral with over 1.6 million views.

The bungled photo opportunity took place in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires outside the Basilica of Our Lady of Lujan, the South American country’s patron saint.

In footage, two unnamed OAPs are fiddling with an electrical device, trying to take a selfie in front of a statue situated in front of the basilica.

The elderly women spin on the spot and get confused when they lose track of the subject on the screen.

The whole time the bewildered grannies are unknowingly filming a video.

In the end, the old ladies approach a young couple and ask for assistance.

The video was uploaded to Facebook by netizen Claudio Stanic and his post has been seen over 1.6 million times. Over 42,000 people shared the footage while 5,000 left amusing comments.

Social media user ‘BraianEmanuelCeballos’ wrote: "Which bright spark decided to give a smartphone to the grannies without offering some simple instructions?"

‘MaximilianoGomez’ said: "Where are the women’s grandchildren to offer them a hand?"

‘ClaudioLanzaStanic’ commented: "Poor OAPs. Let’s hope they do not try to play the footage back on the VCR when they get home!"

The Basilica of Our Lady of Lujan was constructed in a neogothic style and completed in 1935. The Roman Catholic church is dedicated to Argentina’s patron saint.
