A politician from President Putin's United Russia party has been praised on social media after he slapped a schoolboy who insulted him.

Police are reportedly also investigating after a complaint from the teenager's parents against Andrey Odintsov, 33, but even if prosecuted he will only face a fine of at the most 30,000 RUB (361 GBP), according to local media.

The incident was caught on camera by an eyewitness with a smartphone at an event at a school stadium in the town of Lesnoy, just outside the Russian capital city of Moscow.

Odintsov, a local politician, walked over to a group of schoolchildren sitting in a grandstand who were reportedly being loud.

He told them to pipe down but one of the youngsters, Vladimir Denisov, retorted: "What are you going to do, hit me? That would be a criminal case."

The politician then lent towards the boy and slapped him across the face.

Denisov immediately reported the case to a teacher and Odintsov was called to the principal’s office where he was asked to explain his behaviour.

He reportedly told the principal that he knew how to deal with young people but Denisov's parents have already complained to the police and say they are prepared to go to court.

Police confirmed an administrative investigation had been launched and that Odintsov would face a fine of up to 30,000 RUB (361 GBP).

Odintsov has three degrees, including one in law and teaching. He also reportedly has a black belt in karate, just like President Putin, 65.

Netizen ‘Alexandr Anohin’ commented: "I wouldn't be surprised if the kids were swearing and he punished them for it. I doubt an adult man would do such a thing for no reason."

And ‘Evgeniy Kalinin’ added: "If everything really happened that way, I'm for the politician. Kids these days have no respect for adults. They might have deserved it."
