Police had to pepper-spray a young woman after she bit her boyfriend’s tongue in a rage and refused to let go with the drama captured on a video with 10 million views.

Footage of the bizarre incident showed the man, 23, howling in pain while collapsed on the ground and surrounded by dozens of witnesses that were powerless to help him.

His girlfriend, 26, who was apparently furious at being ripped off while online shopping, and was either unwilling or unable to unlock her jaw.

She can be seen sitting next to him, with her face next to his as police in Qianshan County in East China’s Anhui Province try to help separate them.

One of the officers tries to physically prise the woman’s mouth open so she would let go of her boyfriend’s tongue, but this appears to cause only more pain for the screaming victim.

The video, which has been liked more than 15,000 times and gained some 9,700 comments, ends with the man finally being freed after cops used minimal amounts of pepper-spray on the woman’s face.

The victim can then be heard screaming for water.

Qianshan County Public Security Bureau officer Wu Changfeng said: "Members of the public reported the couple arguing outside the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. When we arrived, the couple were together, and the man was trying to free himself from her teeth.

"She wouldn't let go; he was in pain, screaming and shouting, and nobody from the crowd dared intervene. Offers had to use pepper spray - it's not harmful to the human body - to make her let go.

"The couple have been together for a few years."

Her family said that the woman had bitten her boyfriend's tongue after having a meltdown when she realised she had been ripped off in an online shopping scam.

Reports said the incident took place on 20th May, which is an informal version of Valentine’s Day celebrated annually in Chinese-speaking countries because the pronunciation of the numbers ‘520’ (wu er ling) sound similar to the phrase ‘wo ai ni’ - meaning "I love you" in Mandarin.
