The Strange Case of Russian Flags in Northern Nigeria

Day 3 of 10: Protesters carry Russian flag

Following the scramble and partition of Africa and the Berlin conference the colonisers drew lines through ancient kingdoms and nations without recourse to the native Africans. Accordingly, some families suddenly found themselves nationals of two different countries once the colonising Europeans had carved out the borders between Niger and Nigeria.

On 26 July 2023, Niger’s government was overthrown, and President Mohamed Bazoum was taken hostage. The Economic Community of West Africa, ECOWAS led by Bola Tinubu issued an ultimatum to the coup leaders threatening military intervention if Bazoum was not returned to power. Tinubu secretly planned a military invasion of Niger, but his plans were exposed by investigative journalist, David Hundeyin.

Tinubu went ahead and turned off Niger’s electricity supply in breach of the agreement between the two countries which led to the loss of life of babies in a paediatric ward in a hospital in Niger. It has taken radical action from Northern Nigeria to stop Tinubu from carrying out a military invasion of Niger.

In other words, many people in Niger will be eying up developments in Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali. These people might prefer to throw their hat into this alliance rather than continue with the struggle to manage the failing British contraption that is Nigeria. We saw protesters in Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali also carrying Russian flags.

There have been calls for the Igbo to vacate Lagos by 20 August 2024. In other words, it is conceivable that the Yorubas will force the Igbo back to Biafra and northern Nigeria will secede from Nigeria to join the Sahel Alliance. Biafrans so far have sat out the protests.
