George Calvert Tells His Story of Persecution and Settling Maryland

My name is George Calvert, and I am here to share the story of my life, a journey marked by ambition, faith, and the founding of a colony that sought religious freedom.

I was born in 1579 in Kiplin, Yorkshire, England, into a family of modest means. My early years were filled with the pursuit of education, and I eventually attended Trinity College, Oxford. My education and connections led me to the court of King James I, where I served in various capacities, including as a Member of Parliament and Secretary of State.

My career at court was prosperous, and I was granted the title of Sir George Calvert. However, my journey took a significant turn when I converted to Catholicism in 1625. This decision was not taken lightly, as it meant relinquishing my position in the Protestant-dominated English government. Nevertheless, my faith was deeply important to me, and I chose to follow my convictions.

Despite stepping down from my official duties, King James I continued to support me, and I was granted the title of Baron Baltimore. With this title came the opportunity to pursue my vision of creating a haven for Catholics and others facing religious persecution. I initially sought to establish a colony in Newfoundland, but the harsh climate and difficulties in governance made it an unsuitable location.

Undeterred, I turned my attention to the more hospitable lands of the Chesapeake Bay. In 1632, King Charles I granted me a charter to establish the Province of Maryland. Although I did not live to see the colony's founding, my vision was carried forward by my son, Cecil Calvert, the second Baron Baltimore.

The colony of Maryland was founded in 1634 with the arrival of the Ark and the Dove, carrying settlers who sought religious freedom and economic opportunity. Maryland became a place where Catholics and Protestants could coexist peacefully, guided by the principle of religious tolerance enshrined in the Maryland Toleration Act of 1649.
