Intelligence staff for 1st Battalion, Chernarus 10th Separate Tank Brigade, received information via local friendly agents, and by analyzing cellular phone calls, that separatist forces were planning to attack and to take over the village of Yelenovka in North Zagoria.

Battalion operation staff assembled a task force consisting of three T-72 tanks and two BMP rifle squads, augmented by two BRDM scout cars, and ordered them to march by road to Yelenovka

Yelenovka sits in the middle of the valley that runs east to west, with a rather large woods to the east. Approaching the valley from the south allowed the task force to deploy the tanks with their long range weaponry, with a commanding view of approaches to the valley from the north.

However, separatist forces were already in town, consisting of light wheeled armor and technicals which were dispatched by tank gunfire. The BMP rifle squads advanced mounted until the crest of the southern edge of the valley then dismounted and advanced under enemy fire, with 2nd Squad ordered to advance to the middle of the village on the east side, and Command Squad advancing to the northern edge of the west side.

Both rifle squads fought off attacks by Wagner Group operators and Russian militia, who attempted to overrun those positions with the help of vehicle attacks from the north.

Because of the apparent success of the engagement, battalion command staff ordered the task force to advance one km north and to set up a defensive position. The new position put the task force at a disadvantage, whereby the tanks no longer had long fields of fire to engage enemy attacks and counter attacks. Command Squad advanced, but ordered 2nd Squad to remain at it position in the village, supported by a BRDM scout car.

At the new objective, enemy infantry drove hard against the tanks, in one instance disabling Tank 1 which was deployed on the west side of the new objective. Command Squad fought off more attacks from the enemy infantry, and from enemy tanks and armored vehicles.

In the course of multiple firefights between our infantry and enemy infantry, losses began to mount. Commander discovered that a friendly Su-25 ground interdiction fighter had been shot down, with the pilot having bailed out.

Commander assembled an ad hoc rescue operation which was pushed more than two kilometers north, until a BRDM scout car was sent to recover the pilot, and return him to the forward zone. Command Squad conducted a fighting withdrawal, at one point planning to recover or repair Tank 1, only to find that both repair trucks had been destroyed. The tank was abandoned in the retreat.

Losses were light. One T-72 tank was abandoned, and both of the repair trucks were destroyed. 2nd Squad lost three, while Command Squad lost two.

Field counts of enemy losses included six BMPs, three T-34 tanks, three BRDM scout cars, two technicals, two BTR-80As, two T-55 tanks, two UAVs, and one Mi-8 gunship.

Battalion intelligence staff, after receiving reports of the massive destruction of enemy armored forces, determined that the separatists will be unable to launch any more attacks for at least a month.
