"Step by Step" is an American film noir thriller released in 1946, directed by Phil Rosen. The plot follows Johnny Christopher, an ex-Marine who becomes entangled in a web of espionage after a chance encounter with Evelyn Smith, a woman who accidentally possesses a list of Nazi spies operating in the United States. As they try to deliver the list to the authorities, they are pursued by ruthless enemy agents who will stop at nothing to get it back. The film stars Lawrence Tierney as Johnny Christopher, Anne Jeffreys as Evelyn Smith, and Lowell Gilmore as the mysterious Mr. X.
