The Great Crested Grebe is a lovely water bird you might spot on lakes and rivers across the UK. It's easy to recognise with its long neck and fancy head feathers that look a bit like ears. These birds are ace swimmers and can dive underwater for ages to catch fish.
In spring, Great Crested Grebes do a brilliant mating dance. They bob their heads, offer each other water plants, and even run across the water together. It's quite a sight!
These birds build floating nests out of plants. Both parents look after the eggs and chicks. The babies often ride on their parents' backs to stay safe from predators.
Great Crested Grebes used to be hunted for their feathers, but now they're protected. They're doing well in the UK, but we need to keep their habitats clean and safe.
If you want to see these cool birds, try visiting a local lake or reservoir. Just remember to watch quietly so you don't scare them off!
