Police suspect a criminal gang carried out their own vigilante punishment on an alleged thief after the bruised and battered man was found walking naked through city streets.

Eyewitnesses with smartphones filmed the man walking around naked except for bright yellow posters describing him as a "rat". The incident occurred in the city of Guadalajara in the western Mexican state of Jalisco.

Police believe the man was caught stealing from residents who punished the man in their own manner in the Obregon area of the city.

His hands were tied and he was naked apart from the yellow posters which said: "This happened to me for being a 'ratero' (thief)."

Police believe the man, whose name has not been released, had been beaten, stripped and forced to walk the streets.

Officers picked up the man and arranged for paramedics to tend to his cuts and bruises, which were not believed to be serious.

The man refused to reveal why he was walking the streets dressed like he was and police say they have no way of identifying his attackers.

It is the latest in a number of incidents of vigilante justice in Mexico.

In the town of Tlajomulco de Zuniga, a man was recently beaten and forced to run through the streets naked with a sign naming him as a thief.

Guadalajara is Mexico's second city and is regarded as a cultural capital considered to be the home of mariachi music.
