A would-be chicken thief caught red-handed by angry villagers was tied to a tree and forced to hold the dying fowl in his mouth as punishment.

The suspect, whose name has not been given, was eventually "rescued" by police, but not before being shamed in public and filmed in the process.

Grainy footage posted to social media showed dozens of residents surrounding the suspected chicken thief in Bantian Village in the township of Zhangjia in South China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

According to police, the alleged thief was passing through the village when he came across an unsupervised chicken coop.

Believing he would not be caught, he grabbed one of the birds and began to leave the village, but was spotted and later caught by an angry mob.

Bantial villagers reportedly assaulted the man before tying him to a tree using rope.

He was then forced to bite onto the chicken and hold it in his mouth after the fowl suffered injuries during the chase and was on the verge of death.

Local authorities were called and arrived to find the man trapped in the awkward predicament.

They untied the chicken thief and detained him, but it is unclear what punishment he will face for the crime.
