Numerous pupils have been injured after steam pipes exploded in a crowded school canteen sending glass and other debris flying into them.

Images from the Hebei Weichang Huiyuan Middle School show secondary pupils with their heads, faces and limbs bandaged, while their clothes also covered in what appears to be blood.

Emergency services were dispatched to the school in Weichang Manchu and Mongol Autonomous County in North China’s Hebei Province, with ambulances sending "tens" of victims to hospital, reports said.

The headmaster surnamed Qin said that pipes carrying steam had suddenly exploded at noon while the canteen was filled with pupils during the school’s lunch hour.

The blast shattered doors and windows, causing sharp debris to injure the unsuspecting victims - many on their head and face.

Videos showing boys and girls with bloodied faces and bloodstained clothes have been shared countless times on social media.

However, Qin, denied reports of "dozens" or "tens" of injured pupils despite online videos suggesting otherwise.

He claimed only "between eight to 10" pupils were hurt - and none seriously.

The school canteen reopened for use the day after the incident, which is still under investigation.
