This 1095 steel Crusader Bowie is not done with Clay but rather differential hardening through grain refinement. Multiple quench Cycles are used to refine the Grain and control hardening based on thickness and geometry of pre heat treatment. Making the spine flexible and springy and the edge hold very well.
