A young boy has survived being knocked over and run over by a children’s train ride in an accident that fractured his skull.

The four-year-old boy was with his mum, Shi Ling, and aunt when the horrific accident happened in the city of Yibin in China’s south-western Sichuan Province.

Footage from the city’s People’s Park shows the boy standing on the tracks right in front of the kids’ train, which starts to motor forwards in his direction despite carrying no passengers.

"We had ridden the train, and I was busy paying the fare when my son wandered away from me," Shi said.

"I heard someone scream: ‘There’s a child in front of the train!’ - and I almost collapsed when I realised it was my son."

Footage from the People’s Park shows the four-year-old being knocked onto the tracks by the slow-moving train, which continues until it runs over his entire body.

The shocking accident only ended when the ride operator finally realised and stopped the train.

The boy was treated in hospital for a skull fracture and also received more than 10 stitches on his scalp.

He is not in life-threatening condition but continues to be hospitalised.

Train ride owner Wu Xiaoying has promised to take full responsibility for what has been deemed human error on the part of the employee.

The boy’s mum pointed out what is also shown in the footage - that the train was only partially fenced off from the public.

"I’m not satisfied with People’s Park because there are not fences right next to the train," Shi said.

She added: "And not only the train ride - other rides in the park are missing fences too."

The children’s ride has since been suspended pending an investigation.
