A young boy has tragically died after falling into a dry well more than 300 feet deep despite huge rescue efforts lasting some 14 hours.

The five-year-old whose name has not been disclosed is said to have been playing in a field with his younger brother while his mum collected vegetables when he accidentally fell into the dry well.

According to the boy’s parent from the county-level city of Anqiu in the city of Weifang in East China’s Shandong Province, she did not realise her son had fallen into the well until her younger son yelled: "Mum, big brother fell into a hole."

The accident happened at around 4pm local time, with local officials immediately dispatching search and rescue personnel to dig around the concrete well, which was dug more than 100 metres (328 feet) into the ground.

The newly constructed motor-pump well was just 30 centimetres - roughly 1 foot - wide and did not have any warning signs around it, reports said.

Excavators were used throughout the night to dig up the earth around the well. A plastic bottle attached to a rope was also sent down in an attempt to supply the child with water.

The authorities said a camera sent into the ground captured the first images of the boy at just after 3am the following morning. The footage showed him moving his hands while trapped at the bottom of the deep well.

However, when rescuers finally reached him some three and a half hours later - more than 14 hours after he first fell - he was already without vital signs.

He was taken to a local hospital where doctors declared him dead at 7:45am.

He is believed to have suffocated in the well due to a lack of oxygen.

Local police are still investigating the case.
