Evil and fear are not synonymous.
This short video is a follow up to Evil Part I. It answers the questions that you had about fear and what causes it. Sometimes we are conditioned to fear certain things so that we don't explore what they have to offer. Most of the time we don't fear evil at all. Temptation is never rooted in fear. On the contrary we will fear things that make no sense.
While some theories attribute evil to external or supernatural forces, when we look closer we can see the undeniable role of human agency in perpetuating evil. There is no such thing as a being dressed in red with a pitch fork. There is no slue footed being with a tail damming you to come underground and burn for eternity. Lets stop the fairy tales my people. Greed, selfishness, prejudice, and the absence of empathy drives people to commit evil. If we look at the psychological and sociological factors that contribute to this we will have a clearer picture without using the devil as a scapegoat to blame our evil deeds on.
Another problem with evil is that we do evil in order to stop evil. For example, imagine a man is late to work and he is speeding. He hits an old lady and the lady dies. He is charged with vehicular manslaughter. He gets the death penalty. So in order to punish him some must do evil. It is still evil to kill even if you say you are doing it for “good”. What you consider good or evil might not be the same to others. And what about cultural differences or differences with the law. In China, treason is considered bad or evil. But the penalty is death…. So in reality we use evil to punish what we think is evil, and most times the punishment is more severe than the crime and we justify this with laws and customs. I have noticed that people tend to feel more self righteous when judging someone else and often impose harsher punishments than they would for themselves or a family member, even for small offenses.
So who really is the evil one? We need to totally rethink our Paradigm when it comes to crime and punishment. It doesn't’ make you a good person if the punishment you inflict is harsher than the crime. It just makes you more evil. Any way you put it we have to use evil to fight evil. A sticky situation.
