A huge forest fire has torn through the British holidaymaker hotspot of Tenerife – with video shot from the skies showing the extent of the blaze.

Ariel footage shows some of the 200 hectares of torched woodland on the Canary Island, popular with UK tourists.

Shocking video shows trees smoking and smouldering in the area between Madre del Agua and Granadilla de Abona.

The clip shows the scale of the fire broke out Sunday evening and it is believed it could have been started deliberately.

Since Monday, the fire has been fought from the air, with hydroplanes dropping water on the flames.

Around 115 officers of the Army Emergency Unit have been working with experts to try and bring the blaze under control.

Their efforts have been hampered by high winds which have helped fan the flames.

The fire is not thought to be a direct threat to holidaymakers as its away from the main area of hotels.

At present, there are not thought to be any casualties as a result of the large forest fire.

However, trails in the area, which are popular with hikers, have been closed as a precaution.

It is not clear how the fire broke out, the authorities believe it may have been started intentionally or as a result of a mistake.

They remain confident of bringing the blaze under control soon and firefighting efforts are currently ongoing.
