An SUV owner had a shock when after parking their vehicle in a car park the ground collapsed under it and it fell into a sinkhole.

Eyewitnesses filmed the bizarre scene with their smartphones in the city of Rostov-on-Don in south-western Russia's Rostov Oblast region.

Fortunately the car was unoccupied at the time so nobody was hurt and workers from local water company Rostovvodokonal later winched the vehicle out of the hole.

It is not yet known what caused the ground to collapse under the car but local authority officials have launched an investigation.

Netizen ‘Alexander Kingson’ said: "I wonder who will be covering the expenses for the car repairs?", while ‘Vladimir Rostovskiy’ joked: "An alternative entrance to Narnia."

Another online commentator, going under the name of ‘Aleksey Kalashnikov’, commented: "I feel really sorry for the car owner", while 'Dmitriy Dobrotyuk’ added: "This is craaazy."

And, in a reference to the founder of space exploration company SpaceX, a guest on a local internet forum, remarked: "Elon Musk is sending cars into outer space, and we are sending cars to the underground."

Rostov-on-Don is a major port city which will also be one of the host cities for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

It is famous for the number of famous authors who have lived in the city who include Anton Chekhov, Alexander Pushkin, Maxim Gorky, Aleksey Nikolayevich Tolstoy and Alexander Solzhenitsyn.
