This is the incredible moment an elephant went on a trip to a crowded city and was filming strolling around the busy streets.

Shocked onlookers filmed the wild elephant wandering around the city of Pu’er, in Yunnan province, southern China.

The Asian elephant enjoyed a long weekend in the city before it was eventually anaesthetised and taken to a rescue centre.

The two meter high, two-tonne elephant was first seen on Saturday night, its sudden appearance sending revellers running in terror.

It was seen exploring the Simao district of the city causing a little damage before disappearing on Sunday morning.

The elephant, believed to be between 12 and 15-years-old, then returned, strolling through a park and even attempting to enter nearby houses.

Forestry workers blocked roads and evacuated people before anaesthetizing the elephant, the first time this has been successfully done to a healthy adult Asian elephant in China.

On Monday, it was taken to the China Asian Elephant Breeding and Rescue Centre in nearby Xishuangbanna.

The elephant had a medical checkup and was found to be in good health, it is now expected to be released back into the wild.

Chen Mingyong, head of the Asian elephant research centre at Yunnan University, said the unusual visit was as a result of "aimless wandering".

Forest police warned the public to keep a safe distance from the wild elephants which can be dangerous if provoked.

Asian elephants are a protected species, there are around 300 in China, mostly in Yunnan.
