This is the dramatic moment a police helicopter chases speed boats allegedly trying to traffic drugs into Europe.

The movie-like footage shows the chopper chasing the boats across the Bay of Gibraltar, with the Rock of Gibraltar in the background.

It begins with the helicopter chasing after one boat, allegedly being used by traffickers to smuggle drugs between Africa and Spain, at high speed.

The police helicopter is then seen chasing at least three speed boats which were trying to reach the Spanish coast.

Police believe all of the boats were being used to smuggle cannabis hash from the north African country of Morocco into Spain.

They say their operation succeeded in preventing the boats from reaching the Spanish coast to unload their illicit cargo. It is not reported whether any traffickers were arrested.

Spanish towns such as La Linea de la Concepcion, in the province of Cadiz in southern Spain's Andalucia region, are used by Moroccan drug smugglers to bring their products into Europe.

Police maintain a strong surveillance presence in the area, which lies next to the British overseas territory of Gibraltar at the southern end of the Iberian Peninsula.

But officers say that the amount of hashish being produced in Morocco and coming across the Mediterranean to Europe means they are unable to stop the illegal trade.
