A shocking social media video has emerged appearing to show a zoo handler kicking and slapping a performing seal for failing to listen to his commands.

According to social media user ‘Qinlin Eryue’ on China’s Twitter-like microblogging service Weibo, the clip was filmed and sent to them by a resident of Yixing, a city in East China’s Jiangsu Province.

The footage allegedly to be from the popular Longbei Mountain National Forest Park appears to show a seal handler calling the animal to him before kicking him in the snout, back into the water.

"The seal didn’t obey commands during a performance and was treated like this afterwards," the post alleged.

"It doesn’t look like it’s the first time either," the post added.

The video shows the handler repeatedly summoning the seal with the command "come here!" - before slapping it on the head.

The employee also asks: "Do you want to die?"

The short clip ends with the seal being slapped on the head once more.

The Asian branch of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals - better known as PETA - is known to be vocal about the abuse and living conditions of performing animals in China.

Its representatives have yet to respond to Asia Wire’s request for comment.

It is unclear if the man has been given any penalties.
