Dramatic footage has emerged of a heroic man who helped save two of three passengers left unconscious in a crashed and burning car but he was unable to save the last person who was burnt alive.

CCTV cameras in the city of Meizhou in South China’s Guangdong Province show the moment the white saloon car loses control and crashes into the tree, with grey smoke rising from the car engine at around 3am local time.

A few seconds later, the hero Liang Sihai, wearing a black top, enters the frame and begins trying bash in the car's front left window with his fire extinguisher.

Other footage shows Liang, 35, striking the driver’s side window with the extinguisher in a bid to save the three passengers inside.

He did manage to wake the driver, 22, and front passenger, 23, who are both surnamed Gu.

However, the third passenger in the back seat, 23-year-old Fan, was reportedly burnt alive in the vehicle.

CCTV footage also captured Liang at a nearby petrol station, having left the crash site to find more extinguishers.

He took two canisters and had to argue with the petrol station attendant who did not believe him.

"I told him I was trying to save someone, but he didn’t believe me," Liang said, adding that the petrol station employee held onto his door to prevent him from driving away.

"He only let me leave after I gave him my phone as a ‘deposit’," the hero added.

When he returned to the crash site, the fire service and paramedics had already arrived, and the third victim was declared dead at the scene.

The blaze was brought under control and the two injured passengers were taken away for treatment.

Local authorities said they were still investigating the incident but did not say whether it was related to drink-driving.
