This is the dramatic moment a lorry’s metal roof comes loose and slams into an unsuspecting car travelling in the opposite direction on a motorway.

The heart-stopping incident was captured on the dashcam of the motorist who was fortunately able to stop his car before crashing it on the G56 Hangzhou-Ruili Expressway.

The footage shows the driver travelling on the relatively empty motorway in Changzhou City in Central China’s Hunan Province when the large rectangular piece of metal comes hurtling towards him.

The motorist is not able to respond in time and takes the full force of the metal sheet, which damages the front end of his car and knocks the dashcam out too.

When police and motorway services arrived, they found the driver’s side window shattered as well, but the motorist himself appeared to be in one piece.

"It's completely destroyed my car!" the man said, adding: "It almost hit me too!"

Local authorities inspected traffic cameras and found the owner of the lorry, surnamed Liu, who did not realise that his roof had flown off and almost caused a deadly accident.

The police said Liu would bear full responsibility for the incident.
