An incredible video shows a large van being thrown into the air by a torrent of water gushing from a burst pipe.

A witness filmed as people wade around following a leak in the Borivali area of the city of Mumbai in the western Indian state of Maharashtra.

The water is shin-deep already but worse is to come as the unnamed camera man or woman focuses on a pair of parked vehicles.

Extra water is seen bubbling up underneath a large van until suddenly the vehicle flies up into the air propelled by a ferocious geyser.

The video descends into chaos as people flee the scene and the camera operator is more worried about their safety than the shot they are getting.

Another witness video taken from a high window some distance away reveals the torrent of water to be gushing steadily dozens of feet high.

Local media reported that the leak also damaged three other vehicles. It was not reported how badly the van was damaged.

The incident also resulted in an unknown number of homes being deprived of water.

Repairs are reportedly being carried out by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.

There were no reports of people being injured. The pipe that burst was reportedly just six inches (15 centimetres) in diameter. What caused it to fail was not reported.
