Chinese police are investigating a suspected murder-suicide after a spurned man allegedly climbed into his ex-girlfriend’s Range Rover and firebombed it from the inside.

Images coming out of the city of Wuhu in East China’s Anhui Province have captured the moment the female victim’s red Range Rover went up in flames while still rolling idly along a main road.

Numerous witnesses at the scene of the incident reported seeing a man now believed to be the woman’s ex-boyfriend using his Chinese-made white Chery Tiggo to stop her car before allegedly carrying out the chilling murder-suicide.

A man surnamed Ren was quoted as saying: "The man stopped her car from the front, parked next to the road, then climbed in and lit the petrol bomb."

"Her car is an automatic, so it kept moving forwards on its own," Ren said, adding: "It seems he wanted them to die together."

Footage circulating online showed the Range Rover continuing to roll forwards as the fire raged on. It was eventually put out by the city’s fire service, but both passengers were declared dead at the scene.

The Wuhu Public Security Bureau said in a statement that it was investigating the incident, which it claims was the result of a "relationship dispute".

Unconfirmed online reports suggested the woman had tried to break up with the man, who was her colleague, "numerous times" before the incident occurred.
