This is the terrible moment a young man trying to scramble onto a moving train falls between it and the platform and is crushed to death as his friend puts his hands to his head in horror.

Indian engineering student K. Venkatadri Reddy, 22, lost his balance and fell beneath the moving wheels of the departing train.

CCTV footage shows the tragedy unfolding at Chirala Railway Station, in the district of Prakasam, Andhra Pradesh State, north-eastern India.

He boarded the Chennai Central-Hyderabad Express in Bapatla on Friday night.

At Chirala station however, he left his compartment to stretch his legs. He was trying to re-board the moving train when the tragedy occurred.

Venkatadri can be seen to grab hold of a handle near a door and tries to haul himself in.

At the last second he slips and falls beneath the train. His friend tries in vain to help him.

Railway Protection Force Inspector Ravishanker Singh said: "A close observation of the CCTV footage suggests that the boy tried to hold the train door handle, but slipped. His hand bag seems to have hooked on to some part of the speeding train coach when he fell down. He then went under and died."

"His friend tried to save him, but couldn’t."

He cautioned people against trying to board moving trains.
