This terrifying footage shows an underground pipe bursting and sending unsuspecting pedestrians flying into the air in an incident that killed one person and injured at least five others.

Officials from Xinqiao in the city of Jingdezhen in East China’s Jiangxi Province have confirmed one death and at least five injuries so far.

CCTV cameras captured the moment gas pipelines underground suddenly exploded and destroyed pavements on both sides of a busy two-way street.

Pedestrians on the pavement are launched into the air as the concrete bursts underneath their feet, sending hot steam rising upwards in the process.

Witnesses on foot and in vehicles can be seen fleeing the area in the immediate aftermath of the accident, which left a number of injured at the scene as they fell back amongst the debris or suffered burns from the burst pipe.

Local authorities said six victims were rushed to a local hospital for treatment, with one of them sadly declared dead.

Details about their injuries, however, have yet to be disclosed, so it unclear whether the initial explosion or the escaped steam caused the most injury.

Government officials said the cause of the explosion was a burst gas pipeline underground but did not add further details about the case, which they said was still being investigated.
