A teacher has been suspended but will not lose her job after a video showed her repeatedly slapping a schoolgirl in front of her entire class because she had got bad marks.

The experienced teacher surnamed Du was identified as the girl’s homeroom teacher at Dingbian County’s No. 3 Middle School in the city of Yulin in north-western China’s Shaanxi Province.

Du, who has been teaching for 18 years, claimed she was educating the girl, whose marks had been dropping since December last year.

But her over-the-top technique was deemed unacceptable by some of her own pupils, who recorded the footage and uploaded it online.

The video shows the girl standing in front of the classroom near the door while Du scolds her - reportedly sometimes using expletives - slapping her across the face a number of times.

The schoolgirl neither defended herself nor attempted to strike back, the clip shows.

Dingbian County’s education bureau was made away of the footage and said it was taking the case "very serious".

Three days later, Du was handed a three-year suspension of her teaching duties, but she will keep her job and be allowed to teach in the future because of her otherwise exemplary record as an educator.

The bureau said the teacher as well as a number of senior officials at the school apologised to the family in person.
