A Child, Just Like You

Even though I look like an adult, I’m a child just like you.
Just like you, it’s true!
After all these years I still need to go to the toilet
And I still need to…excuse me…

I’m a child, a child just like you.
Every day I still go to school.
My school is called the school of life
And in that school, I’m seldom right.

I need to ask my manager if I may sneeze,
May I sneeze please
Now is not a good time!
When would be a good time?
Anytime other than now!
Atchoo! Oh, wow, that was a big one!
See, that’s how I lost my job,
Now I’m off to find a new one.

I have a beard, but I’m a child, a child just like you.
Oh, come on believe me, it’s true!
I still play marbles and in the autumn conkers,
If I didn’t do that I would be bonkers!
How do you think adults have fun?
I love splashing about in the rain
And play all sorts of silly games.

Every night I stare at the sky
And wonder what’s going on up high
Among the shiny stars,
Whether there are aliens hugging
Or comets giving one another a galactic walloping,
The universe is full of wonder,
And I ponder the meaning of eternity…
…I’m forever pondering, in case you were wondering…

Oh yes, I’m a child, a child just like you,
I still have a thirst
For coming first
In all sorts of relay races,
And always be ace
At whatever I do.
Of course, that seldom comes true…but keep that to yourself.

I’m a child, a child just like you.
Oh yes, it’s true,
That’s why I rhyme
And like to call many things mine,
This book is mine,
Look, there’s my name on this book!
See, how childish of me!

But mostly I’m a child
Because I get bored,
Just like you
Or even more.
I get so bored
I make up stories
And stuff them full of glory,
And pretend that the hero is me.
See, how childish of me!

Just like you
I wonder when I will grow up,
When will I have had enough of being silly and small?
But then again I don’t think being small
Is at all bad.
Today, I may just stay in bed
Because that’s what children big and small
Like to do when they fall
A little bit ill.

Oh, I’m a child, a child just like you.
Can’t you see that it’s true?
See, even though I have wrinkles
I still need to go to the toilet for a…excuse me

See you soon
On the other side,
When we are all big,
Big and wide.
For now let’s stay small,
Let’s stay a child
Because it’s quite alright...
Good night.
