A young woman who allegedly ran through a pedestrian warning light was rammed by a speeding bus and CCTV footage captured the moment she was sent sprawling across the street.

The accident took place on Avenue General Liberator Bernardo O'Higgins, commonly known as La Alameda, a main street in downtown Santiago, capital of Chile.

In CCTV footage of the incident, the bus is seen driving through a busy pedestrian crossing and just as the driver turns right, a woman holding papers tries to nip across the street in front of the fast-moving vehicle.

According to eye witnesses, backed up by surveillance footage, the woman tried to cross the busy intersection while the pedestrian light was red.

The bus rammed the woman and sent her tumbling to the ground.

Bus workers and eyewitnesses attended to the woman on the street, who was said to be conscious and with pain in her left arm.

Local media reported that the 29-year-old woman was aware of her surroundings while she was being transferred to a nearby medical centre for a check up.

The bus driver’s documents were up to date and in order.

Local authorities continue to investigate the accident while netizens offered their thoughts.

‘MarcosZapataTorres’ said: "The bus was going way too fast, it is clear in the video. Additionally, pedestrians are supposed to have the right of way for vehicles turning right there. Anyway, I am not surprised - people in Santiago drive like crazy."

‘DaParri’ disagreed: "The woman is to blame. She ran across the street when it was red for her and green for the bus. People always do the same there, and here we have the result..."
