A man spent hours trapped in a tiny cage after wandering into a trap set to catch leopards.

The unnamed man was filmed squatting in the small cage on wheels used to trap big cats in the Gir Somnath district of the western Indian state of Gujarat.

Amused locals found the man on a patch of grassland.

One man is seen on the video trying to open the cage but he is unable to as forestry officials are the only people who hold the keys to the cages.

The caged man tells the men who find him that he has been there for hours and is hungry but they only mock him for his plight.

He is thought to have gone into the cage in a drunken stupor but there was no other information about what led to his accidental self-incarceration.

Forestry officials denied to local media that any such incident had taken place despite the video rapidly gaining popularity online.

The man in the cage was not identified and it is not known how long he spent inside it before eventually being freed.

A 2016 report found a 20 percent increase in the leopard (Panthera pardus) population in Gujarat, good news for conservationists but also meaning an increased risk of conflict with human populations.

Forestry officials are thought to have set the trap near an inhabited area, to move any leopards living nearby to a more remote location.
